Air Safety Institute releases video on avoiding terrain and obstructions

The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) Air Safety Institute (ASI) released a new video, “Look Out! Avoiding Terrain & Obstructions.”

“Controlled flight into terrain (CFIT) has been an issue since airplanes first took to the sky,” said ASI Senior Vice President George Perry. “But with training like this video combined with the use of modern, low cost terrain avoidance technologies, pilots can gain the skills and tools they need to fly safer than ever before.”

Look Out! Avoiding Terrain & Obstructions features interviews with pilots who have had CFIT close-calls and want other pilots to learn from their experiences.

In addition, the video describes how to use paper and electronic charts to gather terrain information, the effect of altitude on aircraft performance, the unique risks associated with flying at night in mountainous areas, and the benefits of obstacle departure procedures for both IFR and VFR pilots.

The video is made possible by the Canadian Owners and Pilots Association (COPA) Flight Safety Foundation and Donner Canadian Foundation.
