Flight crew reports of drone sightings have been plentiful, but the magnitude of actual risk that unmanned aircraft pose to other aircraft and people flying in the National Airspace System when flown irresponsibly remains unclear. With more drones in the air than ever, it’s a question that the FAA, safety advocates, and researchers have tried to drill down on, though the data collected so far has limits, and the answers remain elusive. Pilots of manned and unmanned aircraft may be able to help change that.
